PROJECT NARRATIVE
Designed to house Tulane University’s rare books collections, this 40,000 square foot library addition was recognized as an exemplary second-year project by university faculty members across disciplines. In addition to housing rare books, the project also fulfills some of the growing university’s programmatic necessities that are lacking in the original library such as an auditorium and gallery space, as well as additional classrooms.
The project centers around a linear staircase which creates a 5-story atrium around which all other components of the building are oriented. This atrium also serves to separate the functions of the library into public and private conditions. With the auditorium and study spaces occupying one side, and the rare books archive occupying the other.
